There is no doubt about it; Twilight is a phenomenon that has swept readers off their feet. On Friday, November 21st, as I was informed, a full crowd of people flocked the theatres, showcasing dedication and love for the books as well as the actors. However, the expectations of success were high, even before the movie was released. Was Twilight a complete failure, or was it successful?
Personally, I expected the movie to be great even though I knew that the movie would never be as wonderfully pieced together as the book and that the actors wouldn’t exactly look like the characters I had envisioned in my mind; so I tried to judge the movie as a visual representation of the novel and not as an exact replication. Despite that, the actors looked promising and the director dedicated herself to ensuring that the movie stayed true to the book. I thought it did stay true to the book, but some scenes, to me, steered slightly away from the strength of Bella and Edward’s relationship. In other words, it didn’t really look like an extremely passionate love at some points in the movie.
Since I’ve read the book already, I could tell when some scenes were missing and when others were invented and added. Because of this knowledge, I couldn’t help but laugh during some parts of the movie. Sometimes I couldn’t believe how ridiculous the dialogue was. Other scenes were awkward and changed the way I viewed some characters, i.e. Edward.
One thing that I was happy about was the moment that Bella and Edward began their “star-crossed” relationship. As well, I was pleased with the casting of Alice (played by Ashley Greene) and Emmett (played by Kellan Lutz). Physically, they were well suited; I also thought they portrayed their characters very accurately. For me, the most exciting scene was the baseball scene. The musical accompaniment for every scene was well done, and I was especially happy with Bella’s lullaby (which Robert Pattinson composed himself).
Overall, I like the movie. I give it a 3.5/5 because of the awkward dialogue and the random actions that the characters do in the movie at times. Even if it doesn’t deserve an Oscar, it certainly made my day.
For those that loved the movie, watch out for the next sequel, New Moon, which has recently been approved for filming.
By ’swept readers off their feet’, you mean readers as in teenage fangirls. Right?
If twilight had come as a movie only, would it gotten that much reception?
If Edward was written as an ordinary kind of guy in the book, would all those girls have squealed when they saw the actor?
How many people even know what this movie/book’s theme suggestively stands for?
The book was sub-par and the movie was rather mediocre.
If it were me, I wouldn’t honor this thing with a review.
God knows why you are doing so.
Well, I think “readers” means “readers” – guys read it too. Maybe not you or the guys you know, but guys do read it, and some of them even enjoy it. I’m not sure what you mean by theme, but probably because I am not that cynical. I think it’s about love and love prevailing over all else. Yeah, so he’s a vampire. Big whoop. They call it fiction for a reason. It’s like feeding your fantasies. Isn’t that something people enjoy? Why put it down for what it is?
Your opinion is appreciated, but I think that Stephenie Meyer is a really good writer. it may not seem like that because of the content and what the story is actually about, but if you look carefully, she’s a good storyteller, and mixes classic pieces of literature into her work. if you can’t realize that because Hollywood has turned this into a big massive money making project – that’s a shame, in my opinion. However, I agree that the first book was not exactly the best. Rather, the series collectively still needs a lot of work – but it was her first published novel/series and yet it was a new york times bestseller. So cut Stephenie some slack and ignore what’s going around you if it bothers you that much. Nobody said you had to watch the movie or read the book. Or read the review.
alice makes a good point.. nobody said you had to watch the movie or read the book.
p.s. alice: do you remember the magnet metaphor? I loved that part. it was so brilliant yet simple. and the whole fire/ice thing?
When you say review, do you mean a good one or a bad one? Every movie needs to be reviewed (great, mediocre, or horrendous), so I don’t get what you’re saying. Don’t you think, though, that if a movie is getting so much reception, it should get reviewed? People would probably want to know: “What the heck is going on? Who’s Edward Cullen and why is everyone raving to watch this so called Twilight movie?”
All there really is to the theme is about overcoming obstacles to be with someone you love. Yes, some of the things Bella does isn’t right; but that is her choice, and it is a fictional novel. No one in real life will ever be faced with the problems she faces.
I’m pretty sure that a lot of movies are like that, where girls squeal for the actor. I think you just take this review too seriously.
I know where you guys are coming from
i love it
end of story
P.S. TEAM EDWARD FTW
i watched the movie, but i read the whole saga first. i think the movie was okay, but it’s hard to live up to the book. i never really expected it to be like “great”, though.
yes nikki, team edward! <3
I think the book was really well written, and that Stephanie Meyer did a great job, but the movie didnt quite match up to the book. I also think that the relationship edward and bella had wasnt fully portrayed by the actors. So basically what im trying to say is it could’ve been better, buutttt the book was AWESOMME !
P.S. Dont get offended by comment if you loved the movie its just my opinion on the matter. ( :
^ i also read all the four books before the movie, and when i watched it, it didn’t seem like it was actually two hours. Since there was a lot of details in the book, the movie didn’t seem like it was full of details. i think that in some parts, it was really obvious that it was acted. Overall, i think that the movie was okay, but the books were obviously better.
book is OK, movie is worse, Mitchell should have done the review this month. any one know what movie he’s doing next month (or if he’s doing one at all?)
reallly? i want to read the books but than there is too long of a wait.
what was your favourite book?
I loved the book and the movie! They were both great! I really LOVED the baseball scene and the ballet studio scene, they were so good!
GO TEAM EDWARD!!! <3
the way these people go crazy over a book. its really tells alot about how our society
i wonder what will be more successful/popular in the long run, Twilight or Harry Potter
i think twilight,
because hp has been here for a while now and ppl
are losing intrest, and twilight is the new teen phenomenon,
that everyone wants a piece of ( :
Yeah, i agree, twilight will be more successful. and i cant wait till new moon! * plus they might be more interested in twilight because of jacob black (hot) and edward cullen (hotter). in harry potter, theres not hot guys, and trust me, girls are interested in hot guys.
-bella cullen <3
New Moon will definitely be better than Twilight.
Twilight was more of an indie’s movie. Summit lacked enough funds to make the best of the the adaptation.
New Moon, however, is directed by Chris Weitz, who has directed The Golden Compass, American Pie, and About a Boy. Professionally, he is at a higher standard than Catherine, whom I’ve noticed, has worked more around indie movies. And definitely, the trailer for New Moon, which has been released recently, is more professionally done and reaches out more to the audience than Twilight’s trailer had.
