Let’s Talk About Stress

By Tanya Waung, Grade 10

It’s everywhere. The nervous twitch, the flustered looks, the anxious orders from one to another… It’s a flu that spreads from one person to the next: Stress. Once one person succumbs, it’s no trouble to pass it on. Yelling at someone for something trivial easily leads to an airborne disease for anyone to catch. It doesn’t help that we feel pressure to make our proud parents happy; after all, they only think of what’s best for us. Joining multiple clubs, volunteering countless hours, studying tirelessly for that next test or exam, and maybe trying to keep a part time job… No doubt that at times it feels like the world’s resting on your shoulders…

How can we tame this stress when we strive for excellence or are pressured to multi-task? The way I see it, there are five major ways to reduce stress.

Prohibiting the Rights of Women

By Valerie Wong, Grade 10

Afghanistan has proposed a new law that prohibits Shiite women from refusing to have sex with their husbands. This new law also requires women to gain permission from their husbands before leaving the house. Is it just me, or are we going back to the dark ages? Has the agony and pained determination of centuries of suffragettes been completely disregarded? What happened to the hundreds of years that women have been fighting for their own rights? For the Afghanistan men supporting this bill, why are they devolving into chauvinists? These are all questions rising out of this controversial bill.

This new law, if passed, will put the following injunctions on women’s rights and give men the power to do this:

  • A woman cannot refuse her husband asking for sexual favours. The husband may ask his wife for sex every 4 days. Another side of this part of the law ‘protects the woman from sexual neglect’, requiring the man to have sex with his wife at least once every four months.
  • A woman cannot leave the house without the permission of her husband. He may keep her inside for as long as he would like.
  • A woman will not have custody over her children in case of a divorce or separation. The husband will have sole custody.

Zeitgeist/Zeitgeist: Addendum Recommendation

200px-zeitgeist-themovieBy Jusjit Lalli, Grade 12

Zeitgeist and Zeitgeist: Addendum are documentaries created by the intellectual Peter Joseph, and they are credited as being some of the most thought provoking films of our time.

Zeitgeist is presented in three parts; part one is named “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” and criticizes Christianity and religion altogether. As a warning, this section may offend people of faith; however, the arguments presented are logical and from personal research, I’ve found that some of the main points are quite true. Therefore, viewers with strong belief may want to skip this section.

Beauty Around the World

By: Farrah Bui Turcotte, Grade 9

I was intrigued at this topic the other day while channel surfing and finally found myself watching The Oprah Winfrey Show. Today’s society focuses so much on appearance and it’s different around the world. What we may think is beautiful here in Canada, may be totally the opposite in another country. Beauty truly and really is in the eye of the beholder.

OJ Simpson’s Story

by Georgette Gorn

Orenthal James “O.J.” Simpson was born July 9, 1947. He was an accomplished football player in the NFL and even acted in films, such as The Naked Gun Trilogy. But let’s face reality; he is most famous and known for his 1995 trial in which he was accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Simpson married Brown in 1985, had two children together, and later divorced in 1992. On June 12, 1994, Brown and Goldman were found dead outside of Brown’s condominium. Simpson was charged, but he failed to turn himself in to authorities. His actions led to a low speed pursuit of him in his car in which he was eventually arrested. On October 3, 1995, a jury found him not guilty. In a civil trial later in California, Simpson was found liable for the murder of Goldman and for battery against his ex-wife and so was ordered to pay $33, 500, 000 in damages. Simpson only surrendered $500, 000 from an auction, and payment from his appearance in a video game.

Winter Fashion

by Thomas Law

Hello future/current fashionistas or just anyone with a love for clothes! Here’s what’s “hot” this coming winter for both men and women!

Women:

teri-jon-belted-taffeta-shirtdress• Any shade of purple or grey is an automatic ‘thumbs up.’ It’s also all about richer colours this season; if purple or grey isn’t your thing, try deep blue, claret red, maroon, deep gold, chocolate, etc.
• Dresses have also made their comeback this season. The preferred dress is definitely the shirt dress with a collar at about knee length for casual sophistication and comfort. Tie in a big matching belt to emphasize your curves and you’re set to dazzle people at any party or formal event! (Be sure not to wear shiny fabrics because they will most likely make you look “bigger” than you really are!)
• If you’re not a dress person, go for jeans that fit! Jeans with just a slightly high waist and closer fit brings comfort and like the dress, a small emphasis on curves. Paired the jeans with a bold coat in all designs and cuts and you’re set to tackle that winter cold!

Racist Incidents After Barack Obama’s Triumph

by Jhona Binos

As the majority of the US population cheered for Barack’s victory on November 4th, multiple racist incidents occurred all over USA right after he was announced the winner of the most historic election of our time. Vandalism, threats, children chanting about Obama being assassinated, and much more…

New York - Four youths went after a boy named Ali Kamara, while yelling the N word and Obama. Ali was from Libya and he was attacked with a pipe during this racist spree.

Rexburg, Idaho - This heavily republican state had kids on the bus chanting, “Assassinate Obama,” not knowing what the words meant. They sang it and innocently added other people’s names like it was such a fun song to sing. “Assassinate Obama~….and Kate!”

One Man Stands

By Talya Perla

Remember, and do not forget,
For war is all you should regret.
It is only the lord’s desire
To light up peace, not light up fire.

People live and people die,
Sometimes it’s hard to say good-bye.
Our loved ones underneath the ground
Because it’s peace that wasn’t found.

I stand upon the battle field
Protected by my metal shield.
I hear a souldier cry for help,
I reach for his hands…
Only one man stands.
