Editors’ Message

Well here it is; the first issue of the Windermere Word by the new and improved committee! Good-bye Jenn and Chitha and welcome the new team of students including editors, designers, and everyone in between. Although, my predecessors did a fantastic job this year, the new, dedicated committee and I will try our best to make next year’s Windermere Word even better with new, fresh ideas, new writers, and of course not to mention again, a new committee. If you would like to be apart of this committee, or have the urge to write for your very own school newspaper, don’t hesitate to contact us at whs_word@yahoo.ca. We wish you good luck on your final exams and have a GREAT SUMMER warriors! See you in September.

It’s May! This issue marks the second last issue of the year. You may not realize it, but last year there was no June Issue. ;) But hey, we’ve got some terrible news for you: by this time, we have both “retired” as project leaders/editors and are now helping next year’s brand new committee take over! :O *Gasp*! The editor of this month’s issue was Valerie Wong (Gr. 10) and the soon-to-be new project head is Gurjita Gadey (Gr. 11). They will both be working with a team of dedicated and enthusiastic individuals: Brendan Chan, Cassandra Ly, Emily Chan, Eric Lam, Jenny Ho, Jhona Binos, Mitchell Agostinho, Nicole Yu, Puneet Riar, Tammy Lee, and Yuge Liu. If you would like to join next year’s committee, please email us by May 25th. We have positions open for several of our teams, including Promotion, Distribution, Photography, and more. Come June, we will have completely handed The Word over to the new committee. You’ll hear from us one last time in June AND get the chance to read about all our screw ups *wink wink*, but just in case you miss it, we would like to say THANKS for always supporting us and believing in what we do. WORD :)

Happy April Fools! We hope you didn’t take it too seriously when we said we weren’t going to publish due to “content issues” – because we were totally kidding! (For those of you who have no idea what we’re talking about, just nevermind.) =] Anyway, April is an exciting month with lots of fun stuff happening, including our — *drumroll* — EASTER WORD HUNT! All you have to do is find ALL the words that have been typed slightly larger, capitalized, and bolded inside this issue of The Word, piece them together, and spell the correct phrase! (Hint: What came first, the chicken or the egg?) Then, email us at whs_word@yahoo.ca anytime during the Easter long weekend (April 10-13th) and be eligible to win a prize! Your name will then be entered into a draw and randomly selected. The winner will be announced over the P.A. and contacted through email the following week. What will you win? Play and find out! Word. NOTE: This is not available online. Sorry!

March marks the 7th issue of the year – can you believe it, SEVEN? With only 3 more revolutionary issues to go, we would like to encourage you to take advantage of the alternative journalism offered by your very own peers and to keep on spreading The Word. Remember, new writers are always welcome, and if you can’t really write worth a dime, that’s okay, because they don’t call us ‘editors’ for nothing. We can help!

In regards to our website, it has now reached 28,300 hits – a major jump from the 21,000 we had last month. We would like to extend a special thank you to those who have continued to visit and comment on articles.  Every comment you make counts toward showing the world (via the Internet) that you care about the issues we talk about; as opposed to being apathetic. This is where The Word steps in: tackling the real issues and events that are taking place around you today that will shape your life, your world, tomorrow, so that you can take action and make informed decisions when the time comes. Of course, there is no time like the present.

Tell everyone you know to VOTE on May 12th – the date of the next provincial election. Speaking of voting – nominate & vote for your April Warrior of the Month before it doesn’t exist anymore! *GASP* “NoOOoooOoooo!!!” Don’t want that to happen? All you have to do is nominate and/or vote. Submit a name, grade, and reason to nominate, and select a name on voting night, and you’re done! Word? Word.

Can you believe it? This is our sixth issue of the year! We’re more than half-way through the school year, with lots of more articles and exciting promotions to come. We hope that you’re liking the new visual improvements to our newspaper, and that you’ll stay patient with us while we spruce up our website and make it easier to navigate. It pays to be devoted readers – we always try to have prizes and promotions going on for cool stuff! All you have to do is read our paper and sure enough, you’ll find something. It may not always be Golden Tickets, but what have you got to lose from doing some reading?

Special thanks to our writers who really pulled through this month and met deadlines. We know it was a short month, having released the January Issue on the 14th and then asking for another batch of articles before January was over, but all your hard work pays off each month. Also another great thank you to our promotions team who parade the halls at lunch with us every month with our great big whsword banners. We have a blast doing it every month and we look forward to seeing you again next month! We couldn’t do it without you. :) To see us in action, please click on “Our Team” at the top of our Word website at http://whsword.wordpress.com.

In terms of our website and current hits, we’ve now surpassed 21 000 since our launch in November. Way to go Warriors for continuing to visit our website – and remember, keep on commenting! Don’t hesitate to write for us! The Word is constantly looking for fresh writers, so go ahead, email us at whs_word@yahoo.ca and get in on this opportunity while you can. As always, SPREAD THE WORD. :)

What’s it like to be at a rally?

Note: the newspaper is not supporting or against any coalition government. This just happens to be an event that took place and we managed to get coverage of it for the benefit of those interested.

December Editors’ Message

Santa’s not the only one working hard this month. We here at the Word have been working extra hard to end off the calendar year with a bang. Although December is a merry time to spend with family and friends, it is also a time to start doing something good for others around you. There are many organizations around the world accomplishing extraordinary things with the help of people like you. We encourage you to be a part of this change and set some new goals for the new year and get one step closer to “saving the world!”

We’d personally like to thank you for supporting our paper and, recently, the release of our website, http://whsword.wordpress.com. (YOU ARE CURRENTLY VISITING! :) ) Our site recieved over 2000 hits on the night of our release and we’re fast approaching 10,000! Please continue visiting our site – we’ll be sure to update regularly whenever there is a new school event. Also, our YouTube username is WHSWORD, so look us up! ;) That’s all for now Warriors, we’d like to wish you and our writers, readers, and supporters a safe and happy holiday season and have a very special new year! Spread the Word!

November Editors’ Message

Dear readers, we would like to thank you for picking up this copy of the Windermere Word.  As of November 5th, 2008, we have decided that we will post our articles online at our new web blog at http://whsword.wordpress.com.  The reasons are as follows:

- for your convenience
- saves paper/toner
- enables readers to post quick comments/feedback
- other readers will also be able to view your comments
- creates more chance for discussion/thought.

Hopefully, this website will be successful and that you will visit regularly.  Each month we will also publish a hard copy of the paper, but only one copy will be distributed to each classroom.  A few copies will also be distributed to elementary schools and community centres.  If you are a teacher and would like to order copies of the Word, please email us and we’d be happy to deliver it to you.  So spread the word and check it out!

October Editors’ Message

It is our proud pleasure to present you the Wyrd Edition of the Windermere Word. (Wyrd is pronounced “weird.”) In comparison to our first issue of the year, we have increased the number of articles, changed our overall layout, and added more pictures to balance our our pages.

Although there have been some comments directed at the content of the paper like, “Can you guys not make it so ultra extreme super environmentalist? Last year was brutal…” Well, the fact is, this paper is exactly the result of what the students at Windermere want to write about. Like any newspaper, we let the students decide. Feel free to create, organize and toil away over your own newspaper. You are more than welcome. However, you are also encouraged to submit articles you have read by emailing us at WHS_WORD@YAHOO.CA It is up to you, the reader, to let us know what you want to see.

As editors, we want to keep making this paper the best it can be. We want it to be an advocate for student voice; a source of alternative journalism (albeit, amateur); a way to find out what’s happening in our school, in our community, our society, our world; and most importantly, to be a driving force for change. So now that the Word is Out – go ahead, Spread It.

Welcome

Just beginning to set up our new blog here – this is a place where readers of the Word can sign up for just a username if they’d like, and post comments on different articles of their choice. It saves a lot of paper and is easily accessible by all. Thanks for reading, and enjoy!
