Canucks Update

By: Jasmin Gadey, Grade 8

One month into the regular season, the Canucks have shown lots of canucks 2inconsistency. Their current play has them wandering around the .500 mark. Plus, if you’ve been keeping up with the games, you’ve probably noticed that they have had an unpredictable pattern of wins and losses. In fact, they didn’t achieve their first win until their fourth game; beating the Montreal Canadiens with a 7-1 victory. Many think that the reason behind our recent mediocre play would be because of our team injuries. At the moment, six players complete the injury list; all of them critical to the success of the team. Some of the injured players include, Alexandre Bolduc, Jannik Hansen, Ryan Johnson, Daniel Sedin and the Canucks captain, Roberto Luongo. Although at first it seemed that with Daniel out, Henrik wouldn’t be able to contribute but Henrik has been doing surprisingly well without his brother.

Canucks Update

By: Jasmin Gadey, Grade 8

hockeyHellooo hockey fans! Here’s an update on your Vancouver Canucks. Over the off-season, GM Mike Gillis was busy negotiating contracts with several players, one of them being Captain Roberto Luongo.  After talking with Luongo, they had him sign a 12 year contract extension worth 64 million; there’s no question now that he’s going to be, forever a Canuck. Gillis also brought 6 new faces to the team, F Tanner Glass, F Mikeal Samuelsson, F Sergei Shirokov, D Christian Ehrhoff, D Aaron Rome, D Mathieu Schneider and G Andrew Raycroft.

The 9 game pre-season went well for Vancouver, going 7-0-2. The pre-season put all the players to the test as Coach Alain Vigneault and his staff kept a watchful eye, as to how well each one was contributing to the team. Unfortunately, the Canucks 2008 first-round draft pick, Cody Hodgson, was sent back to his OHL team, Brampton Battalion for some more development. Throughout each game, the Canucks battled with their best efforts and there were plenty of games where they came out from behind with great third period outbursts. Hopefully, they can carry on this momentum from the exhibition games to the regular season. Go Canucks Go!

Believe in Blue

Stars Canucks HockeyBy Gurjita Gadey, Grade 12

With playoffs just around the corner, can you feel the buzz around the city?! The Canucks have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL since the beginning of February and it has definitely made a difference in the standings! Currently, with a record of 41-25-9 and 91 points, the Canucks sit at a tie for fourth place.

Many people were skeptical back in January when the Canucks lost 9 straight games at home, but who would have thought that they would bounce back and win 11 straight home games? A franchise record in the making! While winning all these games and Calgary going through a tough stretch, the Canucks have pulled themselves within a few points behind the Flames for the North West Division Title. It’s mind boggling; at one point they were trailing ten points behind the Flames and now just only one.

All aboard the Canucks Bandwagon! As the Canucks turned things around in February, boasting a record of 9-2-0, there have been a lot of quiet “fans” coming out and showing their presumed support. Where were these so called fans in January?

Canucks Update

By: Gurjita Gadey, Grade 11

Although the Canucks lost their last game before the All Star break, they still had a very good game. They were playing against the San Jose Sharks and were up the whole game 1-0 with the help of Taylor Pyatt. However, with forty seconds left the Sharks were able to rally up a goal to take it into overtime. Plus, they were able to take advantage of a Vancouver penalty in overtime to win the game. Unfortunately, the Canucks weren’t able to get the two points they needed but at least they got one.

Canucks Update

by Gurjita Gadey

The Canucks are past the half-way point of their season, having played 44 games and with a current record of 22-17-5. They have 49 points and are currently sitting in 2nd place in the Northwest Division and 5th in the Western Conference. However, it is a close race with the teams behind them who are just down a few points and who also have some games in hand…

He Shoots, He Scores!

by Gurjita Gadey

It’s that time again – hockey season is back! the 2008/2009 NHL season gets on its way on Thursday, October 9th, 2008. However, you can still catch some of the pre-season games on TV this year. Now on to the Canucks, they’re back this season with a totally new looking team; with players like Markus Naslund, Brendan Morrison, and Trevor Linden gone, it is truly the end of a great era but the start of an even better one with Roberto Luongo leading the way. With new additions like Pavol Demitra, Steve Bernier, Darcy Hordichuck, Ryan Jhonson, Kyle Welwood and more, this year should be very interesting. They’ve started the pre-season defeating the San Jose sharks, Anaheim Ducks and the Edmonton Oilers twice thus giving them a 4-0 record. I know that the Canucks are predicted to finish near the bottom of this year’s season but just remember that anything is possible when one has heart and puts in the effort. They might be the underdogs but you should never write them off because everyone has an equal shot at winning the Stanley Cup. Who knows what this new season is going to bring us?

GO CANUCKS GO!
