Goodbye Editors, Hello Committee

If you’ve read the Editors’ Message in May, you may know that we have recently decided to form a committee. This means that starting in June and continuing on next year, The Word will be run and completed with a project leader, a main editor, our student writers, and several core teams of people, including Promotion, Distribution, Community, Website, Layout Design, Article Hunting, and Media Coverage. If you are ever interested in working for The Word, you only need to e-mail us! A brief summary of the teams’ duties are as follows:

Editors’ Message

Happy April Fools! We hope you didn’t take it too seriously when we said we weren’t going to publish due to “content issues” – because we were totally kidding! (For those of you who have no idea what we’re talking about, just nevermind.) =] Anyway, April is an exciting month with lots of fun stuff happening, including our — *drumroll* — EASTER WORD HUNT! All you have to do is find ALL the words that have been typed slightly larger, capitalized, and bolded inside this issue of The Word, piece them together, and spell the correct phrase! (Hint: What came first, the chicken or the egg?) Then, email us at whs_word@yahoo.ca anytime during the Easter long weekend (April 10-13th) and be eligible to win a prize! Your name will then be entered into a draw and randomly selected. The winner will be announced over the P.A. and contacted through email the following week. What will you win? Play and find out! Word. NOTE: This is not available online. Sorry!

Can you believe it? This is our sixth issue of the year! We’re more than half-way through the school year, with lots of more articles and exciting promotions to come. We hope that you’re liking the new visual improvements to our newspaper, and that you’ll stay patient with us while we spruce up our website and make it easier to navigate. It pays to be devoted readers – we always try to have prizes and promotions going on for cool stuff! All you have to do is read our paper and sure enough, you’ll find something. It may not always be Golden Tickets, but what have you got to lose from doing some reading?

Special thanks to our writers who really pulled through this month and met deadlines. We know it was a short month, having released the January Issue on the 14th and then asking for another batch of articles before January was over, but all your hard work pays off each month. Also another great thank you to our promotions team who parade the halls at lunch with us every month with our great big whsword banners. We have a blast doing it every month and we look forward to seeing you again next month! We couldn’t do it without you. :) To see us in action, please click on “Our Team” at the top of our Word website at http://whsword.wordpress.com.

In terms of our website and current hits, we’ve now surpassed 21 000 since our launch in November. Way to go Warriors for continuing to visit our website – and remember, keep on commenting! Don’t hesitate to write for us! The Word is constantly looking for fresh writers, so go ahead, email us at whs_word@yahoo.ca and get in on this opportunity while you can. As always, SPREAD THE WORD. :)

As always, each issue can be read online at whsword.wordpress.com. As of January 13, 2009, our hit count has surpassed 17 000 hits. We appreciate all your comments and feedback that you’ve been giving us online and hope you enjoy reading this issue of the Word as much as we enjoyed making it. November Editors’ Message

Dear readers, we would like to thank you for picking up this copy of the Windermere Word.  As of November 5th, 2008, we have decided that we will post our articles online at our new web blog at http://whsword.wordpress.com.  The reasons are as follows:

- for your convenience
- saves paper/toner
- enables readers to post quick comments/feedback
- other readers will also be able to view your comments
- creates more chance for discussion/thought.

Hopefully, this website will be successful and that you will visit regularly.  Each month we will also publish a hard copy of the paper, but only one copy will be distributed to each classroom.  A few copies will also be distributed to elementary schools and community centres.  If you are a teacher and would like to order copies of the Word, please email us and we’d be happy to deliver it to you.  So spread the word and check it out!

October Editors’ Message

It is our proud pleasure to present you the Wyrd Edition of the Windermere Word. (Wyrd is pronounced “weird.”) In comparison to our first issue of the year, we have increased the number of articles, changed our overall layout, and added more pictures to balance our our pages.

Although there have been some comments directed at the content of the paper like, “Can you guys not make it so ultra extreme super environmentalist? Last year was brutal…” Well, the fact is, this paper is exactly the result of what the students at Windermere want to write about. Like any newspaper, we let the students decide. Feel free to create, organize and toil away over your own newspaper. You are more than welcome. However, you are also encouraged to submit articles you have read by emailing us at WHS_WORD@YAHOO.CA It is up to you, the reader, to let us know what you want to see.

As editors, we want to keep making this paper the best it can be. We want it to be an advocate for student voice; a source of alternative journalism (albeit, amateur); a way to find out what’s happening in our school, in our community, our society, our world; and most importantly, to be a driving force for change. So now that the Word is Out – go ahead, Spread It.

Welcome

Just beginning to set up our new blog here – this is a place where readers of the Word can sign up for just a username if they’d like, and post comments on different articles of their choice. It saves a lot of paper and is easily accessible by all. Thanks for reading, and enjoy!
